Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does Ian's use environmentally friendly packaging?
Yes! We’re continually looking for ways to reduce waste and make our packaging even more environmentally friendly. All our master cases are recyclable, and 95 percent of our individual boxed item packaging is made from recycled paperboard or less resourced board, which is unbleached and un-sulfured. Some communities currently permit recycling of our plastic packaging.

Ian’s is committed to producing delicious and all-natural products that are not only good for our families, but our environment as well. In 2007, Ian’s was certified Carbon Neutral.
Q: Where is the expiration date on Ian's products?
Packages are imprinted with a five-digit Julian code representing the date of manufacture. This number is lightly embossed on the flap, near the Ian’s logo. The first two digits represent the year, and the last three digits represent the day. For example, 07035 represents February 4th (the 35th day) of 2007. Please note that this is the date the product was made. The expiration is 18 months after this date for frozen items and six months following for dry items.
Q: Are there any cross-contamination issues regarding Ian's line of allergen-free foods?
Ian’s Red Banner allergen-free line adheres to stringent manufacturing guidelines. Any possible contaminant (like wheat) is removed from the plant. The equipment and room are then thoroughly sanitized. All ingredients and machinery are swab-tested for cross-contamination. In addition, each run of finished product is checked for the presence of wheat, milk, eggs, nuts or soy by an independent testing laboratory.

The World Health Organization requires any wheat-free/gluten-free food include less than 10 parts per million. Ian’s secures independent laboratory testing to ensure products have less than 2.5 parts per million on average. None of our products are tested for shellfish cross-contamination.
Q: What is the process for avoiding or eliminating cross-contamination of specific products?
Wheat-free/gluten-free cookies: These products are manufactured in a plant that does contain wheat. Machinery is sanitized, and the finished product is tested using the ELISA method to meet gluten-free standards as determine by the World Health Organization. Cookies are not tested for any other common allergen and do not claim to be free of any other allergens besides wheat and gluten. Chocolate chips in Buttons may be cross-contaminated with milk. There are tree nuts and peanuts in the cookie facility, but these ingredients are not used on the same equipment.

Panko-style breadcrumbs: These products are made in a nut-free facility on equipment that also manufactures items containing sesame, egg and dairy.

Whole Grain French Bread Pizza: Bread products segregates all common allergens including tree nuts and produces products containing only these items at the end of a production day. It is a peanut-free facility.

Q: What is the shelf life of Ian's Panko Breadcrumbs?
